Nicole and Adam’s Lynn River Falls engagement photos were a beautiful combination of an engagement and maternity session in one.
Nicole chose this nearby location for many reasons; however, the three most important were its proximity to their house (only 10 minutes away), the secluded, private setting of this small waterfall, which offered the perfect spot for intimate engagement and maternity photos, and the summer heat.
We weren’t sure how the heat would affect Nicole, who was already in her eighth month of pregnancy, so we decided to take most of the images in the water to help her cool down while keeping everything within a short walking distance.

I met Nicole and her friend Becky a couple of years ago at my local wedding show in Cambridge. By then, Becky already had plans for her engagement and wedding, while Nicole only knew they wanted to get married and liked my photos.
I booked both couples, and we started the planning process. During that time, I had the opportunity to photograph Becky and Jason’s engagement and their wedding at Cranberry Creek, where Adam was the best man. I also had a chance to meet Nicole again and catch up on our plans.

At that time, I noticed they had some exciting news to share. They were expecting their baby to arrive one year before their wedding, so they planned to have their little one with them on their wedding day.
As we planned their Lynn River Falls engagement photos for that summer, I was excited to work with them.
I had photographed in Port Dover many times before, including a maternity session with Martha and Corey at the lighthouse there. I was very excited to photograph there again, this time at a new location for me, Lynn River Falls.

In the time since we last saw each other, the baby had grown in Nicole’s belly, so once we arrived at the falls, it was clear to me that I needed to take things slowly and pay attention to her pregnancy first, and then to the other factors that would make this photo session one of a kind.

Planning a Lynn River Falls Engagement During Pregnancy

I had photographed engagement sessions with children before, as well as a combined engagement and maternity session, so I was very familiar with this type of session.
Although this was my very first time photographing at the falls, it reminded me of when I used to work on cruise ships, taking photos of my clients at Ocho Rios Falls in Jamaica.

The location of these small falls was secluded and offered an amazing private setting perfect for our intimate maternity and engagement photos.
To showcase the beautiful view of the falls and the river, I positioned the couple in the river just before the falls. At the same time, I went to the other side, walked across the bridge, and photographed some wide, open-lens images showcasing the beauty of this location.

The white foam of the water, created by the falls’ height, was perfect for capturing the couple in front of it, where I positioned Nicole and Adam.
During our session in the water, I made sure to bring the couple out of the water periodically so they would not get cold.
As we went back into the river again, this time including myself, I was happy to use the water of the falls as my background to showcase the emotions and connection between Nicole and Adam.
It was a small area but perfectly suited for the photos we were planning to capture.

As I noticed that Nicole was getting a bit tired from being in the water, we went to the shore and worked in the shade, creating more intimate images in which I made sure she was seated. In some of them, I even had her lie on her back to showcase the side profile of her belly, which worked perfectly for a maternity photo session.
I knew my couple had another outfit to change into, so midway through their session I suggested they change. At the same time, I explored a few more possibilities to make the second part of their Lynn River Falls engagement photos different from the first.

As I said earlier, there were so many reasons this location was perfect for my couple, and as we moved into the second part of the session, I was so happy that I had listened to them and gone along with their plans.
The weather was overcast, which created amazing flat lighting. The combination of the river, their outfits, and the green vegetation surrounding the falls worked perfectly for our engagement photos.

The second outfit for Nicole and Adam featured a more casual jeans look, so I wanted this part of the session to introduce a more creative approach using off-camera flash.
For this part, I made sure to photograph them from different perspectives and place more emphasis on movement in their photos.

Why Use Lynn River Falls for Engagement Photos?

I knew that we would not have a full two-hour photo session. Still, as we came to the end of the session, I loved how they both became more comfortable in front of my camera, which led to more intimate photos and many more creative images.
For sure, these were not the largest falls I have photographed, but for my couple’s needs and situation, they worked amazingly.

I always listen to my couples’ needs and plans to understand their vision. I don’t change their plans, but I am always ready to suggest alternative approaches when I believe they would benefit them.
