Etienne Brule Park Engagement Photos with Puppy

Etienne Brule Park engagement photos in Toronto are perfect for couples who want a relaxed riverside setting, lush greenery, and beautiful golden hour light along the Humber River. For Ashley and Steph’s Etienne Brule Park engagement photos, we planned a summer session that combined bold, saturated tones with natural, candid moments — and included their new puppy, Cobalt, as a big part of their story.
Because they live close to the park, choosing Etienne Brule Park for their engagement photos felt personal and meaningful. We scheduled the session just before dinner time to avoid heavy crowds and intense midday heat, allowing us to work with full sun, golden hour, and soft sunset light — creating variety and depth throughout their engagement gallery.

For their Etienne Brule Park engagement photos, Ashley and Steph brought their new puppy, Cobalt. Because they live close to the park, they chose to have their engagement photos in a relaxed, natural setting with lots of greenery and along the Humber River. Since Cobalt was still a little puppy, we didn’t know how he would behave, so the couple decided to be on the safe side and plan a more intimate, relaxed engagement session.

I have photographed near this park before, at Old Mill in Toronto, but I had never had the chance to experience its serene beauty. For these Etienne Brule Park engagement photos, we chose to start just before dinner time, when the heat was less intense for everyone.

The theme for these Etienne Brule Park Engagement Photos

When I met Ashley and Steph and began planning their wedding experience, they told me they like bolder colours with a more saturated feel. They were also fans of my off-camera lighting, so I was ready to give their Etienne Brule Park engagement photos that exact look.

Even though the sun was very strong, I knew I would need to overpower it with my off-camera flash in certain situations to bring out those rich, colourful scenes.

Once I met Cobalt, their little puppy, I quickly realized he would be the main focus of their engagement photos, while my couple would simply enjoy spending time with him and with each other.

When we met in the parking lot, I noticed that the wind had picked up quite a bit. To avoid this uncontrollable factor, I suggested walking deeper into the park, closer to the riverbank, where we would be more sheltered from both the wind and the harsh sunlight.

I knew that going deeper into the park would allow me to capture raw emotions as the two of them played with their puppy. The walk itself would also help them relax, especially since they were nervous about their very first photo session together.

As we entered the park, the light became much more manageable, and I was able to capture their interactions at different spots as we paused along the way.

Cobalt accepted me right away, so he played freely with his human parents, completely carefree.

Why Taking Photos During Dinner Time Brings Out The Best in my Couples?

Usually, this park is quite busy, according to my couple. However, as I anticipated, during dinner time, many people avoid the park for various reasons, which gave us long stretches of uninterrupted time and peace, especially for Cobalt, without other dogs being walked nearby. This is why I almost always choose to work around dinner time in very busy locations.

At the same time, shooting during dinner time allows me to work with three different types of lighting. We get photos in full sun, then during golden hour, which usually results in more intimate images, and finally, we have the opportunity to capture some dramatic sunset shots.

Overall, it was a win-win situation for all of us.

As we reached the end of the area Ashley and Steph had in mind, I suggested turning back to take a few more photos on the other side of the bridge.

When I arrived earlier, I had about 20 minutes to scout the location, and I noticed some potentially beautiful photo opportunities on the bridge over the Humber River. The other side of the river was more accessible, and I wanted to take some photos there as well.

As we finished taking photos in the riverbed, which was empty at the time, we slowly began making our way back toward the bridge.

Etienne Brule Park Engagement Photos On and Under The Bridge

As we arrived at the bridge, I realized there was an amazing opportunity available for a brief moment. The bridge was lit with soft sunlight, which had just entered the golden hour stage.

By positioning my couple with their puppy at the end of the bridge, I was able to use the light to illuminate them while I stayed on the opposite side. I was almost flat on my belly, levelling my camera at the road and aligning the yellow line with Cobalt, who stood perfectly between Ashley and Steph.

I made sure to capture a variety of images just before the sun went down, and then we moved into the sheltered, dry riverbed. Under the bridge, I saw another opportunity to create more artistic images of my couple. Shooting with a wide-open lens, I positioned them in the middle while the blue sky on both sides of the bridge added vibrant colour to their photos.

As we started walking back toward the parking area, I noticed the sun perfectly illuminating the vegetation along the riverbank, while ducks and other birds swam in the water. I had my couple get down to puppy level and play with him while I captured the carefree moments between them.

I knew these Etienne Brule Park engagement photos were meant to celebrate the two of them, but since Cobalt is such an important part of their lives right now, I made sure this engagement session truly felt like one for three.

Toronto Engagement Photo Session During Golden Hour

As the sun slowly set, we made our way back toward the parked cars while I captured some raw, unposed images of the three of them walking together. At one point, we stopped, and I took photos of Ashley’s engagement ring while the two of them shared the story of how Steph popped the question and how their engagement began.

It was so nice to hear the excitement in their voices, and I learned a lot about what they love—something that later helped me create magic for their wedding photos months after this session. It’s worth noting that their wedding took place in Sudbury, Ontario, which was another beautiful experience I will share in my wedding photos blog post.

As we reached the cars, I took a few final photos of Cobalt and one sweet image of Steph’s reflection in Ashley’s sunglasses before we said our goodbyes.
