Surprise Proposal in Port Dover by Lake Erie at Sunset

A proposal in Port Dover by Lake Erie offers a perfect mix of sunset views, private waterfront settings, and emotional family involvement. This surprise proposal combined a lakeside Airbnb, a heart-shaped arch, and golden hour photos to create a beautifully planned and unforgettable engagement.

Jordan and Dina’s proposal in Port Dover along Lake Erie was a carefully coordinated family surprise, set against a private waterfront property with stunning sunset views. From the emotional proposal under a heart-shaped arch to golden hour portraits along the lakeshore and pier, every moment was designed around timing, light, and authentic reactions. With both families present and hidden nearby, the experience unfolded naturally, allowing for genuine, documentary-style photography that captured not only the proposal but the celebration that followed.

Their proposal in Port Dover was planned with the help of the entire families of both sides. The initial contact with me was made by Dina’s stepfather, John, who reached out to check my availability.
Like every surprise marriage proposal, many moving parts need to align perfectly, and I was happy to help capture the moment through my photography. Although my schedule that day was already quite full, I arrived on time for their proposal in Port Dover and captured everything perfectly.

The Proposal in Port Dover at Sunset

When John called to ask about my availability, I knew I had a photo session that day, but I wasn’t sure if there would be any time conflict. John introduced me to Jordan, his future son-in-law, who was getting ready to pop the question. They had two Airbnb addresses in mind for the surprise proposal. One of the locations where the parents were staying was a more spacious place overlooking Lake Erie; it was the preferred location, but not the first choice.

After saying yes to the booking, I had to make a couple of changes to my photo session that was scheduled before their proposal in Port Dover. My first session was at Guild Inn Park in Scarborough—completely on the other side of Toronto—at 3 pm. I knew that wouldn’t be enough time to drive to Port Dover, so I was able to reschedule the session and move my start time to 2 pm.

I had a short photo session for Alexis’ 18th birthday pre-party, which went smoothly and ended on time. As I got in the car, packed for the next session—the surprise proposal in Port Dover—I had an estimated arrival time of 5:45 pm, and their session was set for 6 pm. It was a tight timeline, but I wasn’t panicking; I was driving and trying to get out of the city, knowing that once the traffic cleared, I’d get a better sense of whether I’d be on time. As I started driving, I got a notification from Jordan that there were changes to the address and that their parents’ house would now be the proposal location.

How I Managed to be on Time for This Photo Session

While driving, I called John to give him an update on my travel. Everything was going as planned, but John wanted to reduce stress, so he arranged for the photo session to start at 6:30 pm instead of 6 pm. This allowed the family to finish the set they were doing and for me to arrive on time and get ready for the surprise. The transparency and constant updates on my arrival made my client feel super at ease and assured them that I would be there as planned.

Once I arrived at the location, John and Dina’s entire family, along with Jordan’s parents, who had arrived from the USA, welcomed me. They showed me the arch in the shape of a heart that they had set up overlooking Lake Erie, and the picture frames positioned in the grass leading towards it. It was an amazing setup with a breathtaking view. I explored the incredible Airbnb property and quickly found several spots where I could capture the initial moment—the surprise. After the pressure had eased for Jordan and Dina, I took some more photos.

Dina’s sisters buzzed with excitement as they prepared for their sister’s engagement. They carefully perfected every detail of the setup until John announced the arrival of Jordan and Dina. Jordan and Dina had gone out for an early dinner and were on their way back to the parents’ place for a drink, as planned.

Sunset Proposal in Port Dover by the Lakeshore

The entire family moved into the house on the 2nd floor, which offered them a perfect view of the actual proposal from the balcony. As the area emptied in a second, Jordan and Dina showed up. The setup and everything aligned led to a look of realization on Dina’s face, but her surprise was about to reach another level.

Jordan led Dina by the heart-shaped arch, kneeling on one knee, opened the ring box, and proposed—a picture-perfect scenario. After the exciting “YES” and the ring’s presentation, Dina saw me and realized that this surprise proposal was well planned. However, her biggest surprise came when she spotted the entire family cheering from the balcony. It was an amazing moment that was worth documenting and experiencing firsthand.

As her family rushed down to congratulate the newly engaged couple, I was there to document the pure joy families experience in celebrating their kids. It was true, candid, and documentary coverage, perfectly suited to this part of the event. After the couple spent some time with their families, I asked if we could take a few moments for some posed photos of the families and, afterward, images of just the two of them.

As we finished the group photos, John told me there was access to a private beach area from the property that was worth checking out. Before I took the couple down, I went to see what I would be working with, and the sight left me stunned. The path leading towards the lake reminded me of the area around Lake Como in Italy, perfectly illuminated with the warmth of the golden hour sun. The pier area where we had access to the beach was clean and secluded—perfectly private for this kind of photo session.

The photo session by Lake Erie at Golden Hour

Before we went down to the beach, I wanted to make sure we had all the photos by the heart arch so I could control the lighting and poses. Not that I didn’t like the actual proposal, but I knew from experience that a couple often likes to make some adjustments once the pressure is off. As a retake, now with less suspense but more emotion, I was able to recreate the same moment with more control, resulting in amazing photos of already great scenery.

As we headed towards the beach, I was able to photograph my couple from many perspectives, showcasing the view, walking down, and creating some silhouette photos using the sunshine as my backlight. There was tall grass in this area, which was perfect for my ideas. As the couple stepped down toward the beach, I stood to the side and captured motion images that perfectly caught the moment.

Once we arrived at the pier, I spotted a shady spot and positioned the couple on the last step of the staircase. Here, I took most of their intimate photos away from the family and any curious viewers nearby. I could see the happiness in Dina’s eyes and the pride on Jordan’s face. Both of them were super cute, and the images I created reflected their feelings as they curled into each other.

I wanted to capture their carefree walk on the long private pier, so I asked them to walk towards me and have some fun. The timing felt perfect, and they enjoyed the moment so much that when we reached the end of the pier, Dina suggested that someone lift her up. With her feedback, I took some images of Jordan holding her while she proudly displayed the amazing diamond ring on her hand.

Sunset Photos in Port Dover

Port Dover is very dear to me because I photographed one of my iconic sunset engagement photo sessions there. Martha and Corey’s engagement was my very first time in this city, and since then, I have photographed their wedding in Port Dover and both of their kids’ photo sessions. I knew that Lake Erie is one of those lakes where the sun actually sets into the water, creating an amazing view.

Before we started walking back up to the property, driven by the idea of perfect sunset photos, I stepped up. I photographed the couple in more traditional scenery, capturing images that the parents would cherish. The moment we arrived back at the Airbnb patio, I left my couple to enjoy their family and took the ring for some close-up photos. It was an amazing ring, and I wanted to find something in the environment that would be symbolic for the moment and look good.

As I was creating some beautiful close-up photos before finishing my coverage, I asked the entire family if I could take a group photo from the balcony where they witnessed the proposal. I climbed to the 2nd-floor balcony and took some amazing wide-angle images that captured this lovely family and the environment where the proposal in Port Dover took place.

Thank you, John, for finding me and booking me for your step-daughter’s proposal in Port Dover. Dina and Jordan, wishing you a marvellous life and a beautiful future ahead of you.
