Fast Planning Process for This Surprise Proposal at Mill Pond

Matt and Angela’s surprise marriage Proposal at Mill Pond in Milton was one of the fastest scheduled and executed proposals I have done so far.

During one of my photo sessions, I received an inquiry from Matt about his plan to propose in a surprise way at Mill Pond in Milton. As it was Thursday afternoon and he was planning for that Saturday, I knew the timeline was very tight. I had photographed an engagement at Mill Pond before, so it was easy for me to come on board. Wanted to connect with Matt as soon as possible, and we planned everything exactly the way he wanted.

I connected with Matt by phone that same night, and we scheduled the session for the day after our initial booking. It was extremely short notice and a very narrow window, but both of us knew what we were doing. Matt had a clear idea of exactly where he wanted to pop the question and already had a plan for before and after the surprise proposal.

On my end, I knew the area well and was able to align my schedule with Matt’s to ensure his surprise went smoothly.

Since last year, I’ve been very busy with surprise proposals, and I’m really enjoying it. Although it was a new experience for me at first—working with the guys and planning these events instead of brides—I’ve come to appreciate how quickly things can come together. Once they know what they want and it fits their plan, they move fast. Last year alone, I was grateful to help 10+ excited couples say their one-of-a-kind “YES!” in front of my camera.

Locations Scouting Before The Final Moment

For Matt’s surprise marriage proposal at Mill Pond in Milton, we planned for early afternoon, as they had dinner scheduled after the photo session.

Not knowing if the area would look the same as when I had last seen it a couple of years ago, I arrived well ahead of time to secure one of the few parking spots near the main entrance to the park, just off Martin St.

As I stepped out of the car with my equipment ready, I noticed a group of people sitting near the gazebo where Matt planned to get down on one knee. I took a few test shots to set my camera settings, and once I was ready, I approached the group and explained the plan Matt and I had and what would be happening in the next few minutes. They were so happy to help—they positioned themselves so they were hidden from the camera while also helping to pause other visitors heading toward the gazebo.

It was a bit stressful, as I didn’t know what my couple looked like, although I had asked Matt to send me a photo so I could recognize them.

I knew that once they arrived, there wouldn’t be time to prepare or stage anything. During our last conversation, I made sure to tell Matt to stay either inside or just outside the gazebo to avoid mixed lighting and to open their bodies toward me so I could clearly see their profiles. This allowed me to capture both the ring and their reactions.

The Surprise Marriage Proposal at Mill Pond under the Gazebo

As I was running through different scenarios in my head, Matt and Angela walked so smoothly into the gazebo that I was surprised they had already passed me. I stayed off to the side so Angela wouldn’t recognize me and connect the dots, which allowed them to move under the gazebo unnoticed by most of the park visitors—and even by me at first.

As they reached the end of the gazebo, they paused and looked out over the lake. Matt had told me they come here often, since Angela works nearby, and they’ve always enjoyed the view of the pond. At that moment, he asked Angela to look toward the lake so he could take a photo of her. He then pulled the ring box from his back pocket and began the proposal.

I was ready for this and used my three cameras to capture every detail.

As Angela reacted to the surprise and Matt was fully in the moment, I moved closer. That’s when Angela realized I was part of the surprise. It was such a beautiful moment—honestly, we couldn’t have planned it better even if we had a full month.

I knew this was only half of what we planned, since we would also do a full photo session after their surprise marriage proposal at Mill Pond.

I then moved to the other side of the pond to capture the scene from a distance, showing the full view and location from a different perspective.

Engagement Session After Proposal at Mill Pond

When I met them back on the trail, I officially congratulated them and explained my plans for their photos.

They are a tall, lovely couple, and I was excited to create some magic during this session.

The trail was narrow, but it wasn’t busy at that time, so I had the whole area to work with.

I knew their emotions were still high, and I wanted them to enjoy the moment rather than feel stressed, so I explained how I approach photos. That helped them relax and feel comfortable letting me create some great images.

As we walked along the trail, I mentioned that I would bring them back to where we started, at the gazebo.

I wanted to capture images in the forest, by the pond, on the rail tracks, at the bridge, and on the other side of the pond, where the gazebo would be visible in the background.

The hour-long session went by in a heartbeat. We captured so many photos that, toward the end, we even stopped by John Sproat House, built in 1857 a historic house with a Georgian architectural style. There, I took some of the most intimate images of the two of them.

My Photography Style of Work when I photograph Outdoors?

Over the years, I’ve learned that you need a clear plan for how you move when photographing a couple or a family outdoors. Instead of going from one place to another and guessing what to shoot, I create a path that naturally circles back. In Matt and Angela’s case, we walked around the pond, stopping at spots we liked and that were worth photographing. If a location didn’t work, we kept moving; if it did, we stopped, took photos, and continued.

In this way, I’m able to control both the timing and the locations, and my couple knows we’ll end up back where we started. That gives them reassurance that we’re not lost or wasting time, and it helps them align their plans with our progress along the route.

As I brought them back to the gazebo from the other side, I positioned them on the only bench that had a full view of the gazebo and the entire pond. They were so relaxed and so in love that they almost forgot I was even taking photos. I was excited that we were able to create such amazing images, that Matt’s plan worked perfectly, and that Angela received such a special engagement ring.

As we said goodbye and they headed to their dinner, I went home and completed their images within the next two days. I wanted to provide Matt with great service and a quick turnaround, especially since they hadn’t asked about delivery timing at all. I wanted them to have those photos right away so they could share their engagement with friends and family.
