Neidin and James’ Pearle Hotel wedding was the culmination of a relationship I have shared with their family for almost a decade. I first met Neidin at her sister Claire and Gary’s wedding, and over the years I have photographed family sessions, growing families, and many important milestones for them. Their wedding day brought everything together, beginning with getting-ready photos at The Pearle Hotel & Spa in Burlington, followed by their church ceremony at St. Andrew Church in Oakville, wedding photos by Lake Ontario, Erchless Estate and Oakville Lighthouse, and finally their reception at The Pearle. With no second photographer, I documented their entire 13-hour wedding day using a combination of documentary photography, creative portraits, available light and off-camera lighting. This Pearle Hotel wedding was especially meaningful because I was not only photographing a beautiful wedding\u2014I was documenting another important milestone for a family I have known for many years.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Family Story Behind This Pearle Hotel Wedding<\/h2>\n

Neidin and James’ wedding at The Pearle Hotel was the true culmination of my relationship with their family. I met Neidin for the first time at her sister’s wedding many years ago. Being a wedding photographer for Claire and Gary’s wedding<\/em><\/a> day was one of those experiences that had a great impact on my photography.
\nBack in 2016, when I photographed their wedding, I was one of the leading creative wedding photographers in Toronto, known for dramatic, off-camera lighting.<\/p>\n

Since then, I have photographed Claire’s best friend Diana and Sebastian’s wedding<\/em><\/a>, where I met Claire and her sister again.
\nOver the next 10 years, I became the family photographer for both families, capturing many family sessions<\/em><\/a>, their children’s births, and numerous traditional photo shoots.
\nWhen Neidin called to book me for her wedding almost three years in advance, I was so excited that I would finally be able to document her wedding day.<\/p>\n

The Pearle Hotel Wedding in Burlington<\/h3>\n

When Neidin told me about their venue, The Pearle Hotel & Spa, Autograph Collection, it was still in the process of being built.
\nKnowing the reputation of the Pearle Hospitality group<\/em><\/a> and my past work at their venues<\/em><\/a>, I was so excited to photograph there.
\nNeidin and James had booked me for their engagement photo session as well, but they chose to add the session hours toward their wedding-day coverage so I could capture the entire day as they had planned.
\nIt would have been nicer if I had been able to photograph their engagement session, but knowing Neidin for many years, I was completely comfortable going straight to their wedding photos and adapting to their needs.<\/p>\n

Their getting-ready photos, including their wedding party, were scheduled at The Pearle Hotel & Spa. Their wedding ceremony was planned at the same church where her sister had married, St. Andrew Church in Oakville, and the photo session included many of the same areas as well.
\nErchless Estate and the Oakville waterfront with the Oakville Lighthouse were on the list for their photo session, along with their Pearle Hotel wedding photos.
\nOverall, we had an amazing plan for their wedding, and I was so excited to capture it.<\/p>\n

A Documentary Approach to Their Pearle Hotel Wedding Getting-Ready Photos<\/h3>\n

Considering this was my very first Pearle Hotel wedding and I did not know anything about the hotel’s logistics, I arrived much earlier than needed.
\nThat day, there was a fair festival at the park near the hotel, so the streets of Burlington were already packed very early in the morning.
\nI learned that the best way to park my car was to use the hotel’s valet parking, so I needed to plan how I would manage my equipment while my car was taken from me.
\nInstead of panicking, I embraced this new reality and went to Neidin’s room.<\/p>\n

It was so nice seeing Neidin again, along with Claire, her sister, and her little daughter, who was a flower girl.
\nThe room where they were getting ready was spacious, bright, and full of character, so I wanted to capture the atmosphere in the photos I was taking.
\nSince Claire’s wedding, I have adopted a more documentary approach to my photography and have been excited to create images with my Sony cameras and prime lenses, in addition to my workhorse Canon cameras.
\nI’m not sure where that hour went, but I created some images I was very proud to present to the couple.
\nI started with candid getting-ready images of the makeup, hair, getting into the dress, and all those little elements that make a wedding day unique.<\/p>\n

The Groom and Groomsmen Photos at The Pearle Hotel<\/h3>\n

Usually, my second photographer captures the groom and his groomsmen while I am with the bride and bridesmaids.
\nThis time, I was the only photographer, and after finishing Neidin’s getting-ready photos, I went to James’ room to work on their images.
\nTheir room was much smaller than the girls’ room, so I focused primarily on documentary coverage. Once we finished the actual getting-ready images, I asked everyone if we could go outside to take some additional photos.<\/p>\n

I love the photos we took in the room, but photographing outside gave me a much better opportunity to showcase the hotel from a distance while also using the sun as a backlight in many of the images.
\nThe groomsmen helped me so much in establishing a fast connection, resulting in some really nice photos taken in record time.
\nThat allowed me to review the images I liked, get my car, and start driving toward the church.
\nI was happy that many of their images featured The Pearle Hotel in the background, marking the beginning of an amazing wedding day.<\/p>\n

The Church Ceremony at St. Andrew Church in Oakville<\/h3>\n

I have had the privilege of photographing many weddings at this church, so I knew my way around it.
\nI arrived on time and went straight to setting up my equipment so I would have enough time to capture candid images of the guests arriving for the ceremony.
\nThe light at that time of day was shining directly onto the church’s entrance door. I predicted this could become an issue, especially when it was time for the grand entrance at the beginning of the ceremony.
\nI couldn’t prevent the light from entering, so I decided to cover those photos closely. If necessary, I could later convert some of them to black and white with high saturation to reduce the effect of the sun glare.<\/p>\n

Once I went outside the church, I noticed the Rolls-Royce that was bringing Neidin with her uncle from Ireland.
\nI was able to recreate a similar photo of the two of them looking out of the car window, with the reflection of the church appearing in the lower part of the open window.
\nKnowing about the connection between Neidin, Claire, and their uncles from Ireland, I was especially happy to be there on time to capture this image.
\nAs the wedding guests went inside the church, the ceremony began.<\/p>\n

How to Photograph Church Wedding Ceremony with One Photographer<\/h3>\n

As the only photographer, I captured everything I could while focusing on the moments I understood were most important to my couple.
\nThe ceremony was emotional and full of laughter, and it included an amazing speech from the priest that resonated with all the wedding guests.
\nAs I captured the recessional, Neidin wanted me to take a group photo of all the guests as they exited the church.
\nThere were probably more than 100 guests, so simply taking photos from the other side of the street would not have worked. The people in the front row would have blocked many of the guests behind them.<\/p>\n

As I was trying to troubleshoot this from the boxwood fence of the neighbouring house, an older gentleman emerged and asked if I would like a ladder so I could capture the group from a higher vantage point.
\nHe probably heard me saying out loud to myself that if I had a ladder, I could take better group photos.
\nHe brought us a 12-foot ladder and let me use it.
\nIt was amazing how quickly the atmosphere in the crowd changed, and I was able to take their group photos from an angle that worked best for everyone.<\/p>\n

The Wedding Photo Session by Lake Ontario<\/h3>\n

I thanked the gentleman, returned the ladder, and we went on to complete their family photos in the shade, with St. Andrew Church as our backdrop.
\nAfter we finished these photos, the plan was to walk across the street toward the lakefront and capture some bridal-party images.
\nBefore we arrived there, I saw a large tree with beautiful, newly bloomed flowers and asked my bridesmaids to take some photos there.
\nIt was the same house where the gentleman had lent me the ladder.<\/p>\n

Later, when we returned, I captured some stunning images of my couple there as well.
\nAs we were walking toward the lake, I was ahead of them and started creating images that did not need any posing\u2014simply walking, happy photos of the entire party.
\nOnce we arrived at the lakefront, the wind was a bit stronger, so I worked there, although it was more challenging to manage the hair and dresses of my bridesmaids and Neidin.
\nI captured all these images, then moved my couple to the Rolls-Royce while I went inside the church to pick up my equipment and head to the next photography location: Erchless Estate and the Oakville Museum Garden.<\/p>\n

Wedding Photos at Erchless Estate and Oakville Lighthouse<\/h4>\n

The next location for photos was Erchless Estate and the Oakville Lighthouse.
\nThis part of the photo session was only for my couple, so I instructed the Rolls-Royce driver to park the car all the way at the pier at the Oakville Marina, which led toward the Oakville Lighthouse.
\nAt this spot, I took some of my legendary photos of Claire and Gary’s wedding that are still part of my wedding magazine many years later.
\nI wanted to recreate a similar image with a different energy, using my Sony camera this time.<\/p>\n

The pier toward the lighthouse was packed with people, so I had two options: wait and risk losing 20\u201330 minutes to find a clear area, or let my couple walk to the lighthouse and back. At the same time, I photographed around the people and removed unwanted elements in post-production when needed.
\nI chose the second option, and we created some amazing images that were very different yet still connected to her sister’s wedding photos.<\/p>\n

Once they returned, I photographed them walking through the garden of Erchless Estate.
\nThese were very vibrant images, as I used the sunlight to fully illuminate my couple and Neidin’s red hair.
\nAs we arrived at the top, I took some photos on the estate’s terrace, right when we needed to head toward The Pearle Hotel.
\nI knew this would be the most stressful part of the day, but I loved what we had done so far, so I wasn’t stressing too much about the upcoming Pearle Hotel wedding photos.<\/p>\n

Rolls-Royce Photos by the Lake at This Pearle Hotel Wedding<\/h4>\n

As we passed The Pearle Hotel and reached the dead-end street by the lake, I followed the Rolls-Royce.
\nOnce the car stopped, I did not have time to park my car because we had only 15 minutes for this part of the photography.
\nI left my car a fair distance behind the Rolls-Royce so it would not appear in my photos, turned on the hazard lights, and went to photograph my couple by the car they had rented.<\/p>\n

We had only 15 minutes before they would lose access to it.
\nI was able to create some amazing images of my couple by the car, and I was so happy we had the opportunity to do this.
\nAt that time, the Pearle Hotel wedding coordinator approached me and asked if I wanted to photograph them in front of the hotel as they exited the Rolls-Royce and perhaps take some additional posed photos.
\nI said, of course, but at the same time I needed to unload my equipment, take my car to valet parking, then step back and get ready for the photos.<\/p>\n

Not wasting any time, I first explained that I needed to park before I started photographing.
\nI pulled up by the front door and asked one of the groomsmen if I could get my equipment into the reception area. At the same time, a hotel reception staff member brought me a cart to unload my car.
\nI gave my equipment to the groomsman, handed my car over to the valet, and stepped back, waiting for the Rolls-Royce to park in front of the hotel.
\nI couldn’t believe all of this happened in about two minutes, but I was so happy I was able to free myself to capture those photos.<\/p>\n

The Pearle Hotel & Spa Wedding Photos<\/h4>\n

As the Rolls-Royce parked in front of the hotel and my couple exited, I captured about 50 images before the wedding coordinator took us to the areas where Pearle Hotel wedding couples typically take photos.
\nI wasn’t familiar with the hotel’s indoor and outdoor areas for wedding photography, so I asked to be shown only the outdoor areas at that time.
\nOnce we were indoors, I asked if I could photograph my couple by their stunning staircase with its modern lighting.
\nWe worked through all those photo locations, and after my last images on the staircase, I took the final shot as planned while my couple was climbing the stairs.<\/p>\n

The last part of the photography that Neidin wanted was the reveal of the reception room and their reactions.
\nUntil then, I hadn’t had a chance to view their reception area at Northshore room.
\nI was stunned by the beauty of the room and the setup Neidin had organized.<\/p>\n

It was so beautiful that I asked the wedding coordinator at The Pearle Hotel for five minutes to photograph the room before the reveal with my couple.
\nThere were so many details: beautiful flowers, elegant d\u00e9cor, and overall amazing decorations that, for a moment, I forgot that I was actually photographing people and not the d\u00e9cor.
\nAs I finished these photos, I captured the room reveal with Neidin and James, with genuine joy and pride on their faces as they walked around their reception room.
\nI ended this part with some photos by the sweetheart table, and my couple went to enjoy the cocktail party while I set up my lighting equipment.<\/p>\n

The Wedding Reception at The Pearle Hotel & Spa<\/h4>\n

Once I finished my lighting setup, I stepped outside the room and captured candid images of the cocktail party as my couple prepared to open the room to their guests.
\nIt was very candid rather than an official receiving line. Neidin and James positioned themselves by the entrance and naturally welcomed each of their wedding guests.
\nOnce all the guests had gone inside, it was time for their grand entrance, followed by their first dance.
\nThe light in the room was amazing, so I did not need any additional off-camera lighting.<\/p>\n

I knew, however, that once the night arrived, it would be much harder to set up my lights without interrupting the atmosphere.
\nUsing only available light, I captured their first dance and many of the speeches.
\nI even shared a table with Ruben, their amazing DJ, for dinner.<\/p>\n

Once the lights in the room dimmed, I could see the elegant dinner reception in a completely different light.
\nIt was elegant, stylish, and the people were ready to party.
\nThe parents’ dance opened the dance floor, with James dancing with his mom and Neidin dancing with her uncle.
\nThe DJ lifted the atmosphere in the room in no time, and everyone was ready to party.
\nAs I captured the cake cutting with my couple, I told them we had two photo locations left to complete before I left.
\nEarlier, Neidin had asked me if she could take a photo with the mirror sign in front of the room, and I wanted to create some nighttime photos using the hotel name and the party room windows beneath the sign.<\/p>\n

Nighttime Wedding Photos at The Pearle Hotel & Spa<\/h4>\n

After finishing the photos with the entry sign and my clever approach to photographing with the mirror, we went outside for the day’s final photo.
\nFor her sister’s wedding, I had created a similar image in front of their venue, and now it was Neidin’s turn.
\nEarlier that night, I had gone outside and made a plan for how we would take these photos because there were a lot of people walking around, and the fair festival was still taking place nearby.
\nKnowing what I wanted to capture made it much easier to achieve, especially with a couple who had already worked with me for the previous 13 hours.<\/p>\n

I was so happy that we were able to create some amazing images that aligned with my couple’s likes.
\nAt the same time, we stood out from others with our multiple photography locations and an amazing combination of different photography styles, using the beautiful scenes at The Pearle Hotel & Spa as well as locations throughout Oakville.<\/p>\n

As I went back inside to say goodbye to everyone I knew, I thanked Neidin and James for trusting me with their wedding photography and rushed home to see how their photos looked on my studio screen.
\nI also want to thank the staff at The Pearle Hotel & Spa for their amazing and professional assistance throughout the day.

What I Learned From This Pearle Hotel Wedding<\/h4>\n

One of the biggest advantages of photographing a wedding across multiple locations is the variety it gives us.
\nNeidin and James’ wedding included The Pearle Hotel, St. Andrew Church, the Oakville waterfront, Erchless Estate, the Oakville Lighthouse, and several locations along the way.
\nThat required careful timing, early arrival, quick decisions, and a willingness to adjust the plan when circumstances changed.<\/p>\n

For couples planning a Pearle Hotel wedding, I always recommend building some flexibility into the photography timeline.
\nA beautiful wedding day rarely unfolds exactly as planned. Traffic, pedestrians, weather, parking, church restrictions, transportation, and even unexpected opportunities can change the timeline.
\nMy approach is to arrive early, understand the environment, and keep looking for opportunities rather than allowing those changes to become stressful.<\/p>\n

In Neidin and James’ case, the 12-foot ladder, the unexpected light at the church, the crowds at the lighthouse, the Rolls-Royce timing, and the busy streets around The Pearle all became part of the creative process.
\nThe goal isn’t to control every detail.
\nThe goal is to understand the plan well enough that when something changes, I can make a quick decision and keep creating.
\nThat is one of the things I love most about wedding photography.<\/p>\n

Yes. Multiple locations can add a lot of variety to your wedding gallery. The key is to plan the route and transportation carefully so the photography experience does not feel rushed. For Neidin and James, we incorporated several locations while still keeping the day moving.<\/p>\n

5. What happens if there are crowds or unexpected problems at a photography location?<\/em>
\nI look for alternatives rather than allowing unexpected circumstances to stop the photography. At the Oakville Lighthouse, for example, many people were using the pier. Instead of waiting for an empty location, I worked around the movement and used composition and post-production to create the images we wanted.<\/p>\n

6. Do you recommend a second photographer for a Pearle Hotel wedding?<\/em>
\nIt depends on the size and schedule of the wedding. A second photographer can be especially helpful when the bride and groom are getting ready in different locations or when there are many simultaneous moments. However, Neidin and James’ wedding was photographed by me alone, and with careful planning I was able to document their entire 13-hour wedding day.<\/p>\n
