Over the past 25+ years of working with hundreds of couples, I have noticed a very common pattern at the beginning of engagement sessions. In my opinion, a large part of the engagement photographer’s role is to help the couple relax, feel comfortable, and guide the couple to the level you want them to be at. Once that comfort level is reached, the couple can focus on simply interacting with each other instead of thinking about the camera. When couples are able to let go of that invisible wall of discomfort and act naturally together, the photographer has already done a big part of the job successfully.<\/p>\n

By that point, I usually step back after guiding my couple through the next set of poses or ideas, and begin capturing their natural interactions and genuine moments together.<\/p>\n

I talk a lot during engagement sessions, and I do that intentionally. I like keeping couples informed about what we are doing, what comes next, and how the session is flowing overall. Love to keep my couple in the loop. I also like showing photos directly from the camera during the session to make sure the couple feels confident and excited about the direction we are going. Experienced engagement photographers in Guelph should be able to recognize when a couple feels comfortable and when adjustments need to be made.<\/p>\n

Since engagement sessions are usually planned well before the wedding day, it is often easy to find a date that works for everyone involved. Some photographers avoid booking engagement sessions on weekends without always explaining the reason. While I personally do not recommend weekends for most engagement sessions, there are practical reasons behind that suggestion. Popular locations tend to be much more crowded on weekends, and when it comes to weather flexibility, weekdays offer five possible options compared to only two on the weekend. Weekday sessions are also usually easier to reschedule and less likely to conflict with other plans or events couples may already have.<\/p>\n

When planning an engagement session, I like to work with three possible dates in mind. The first is the ideal date we hope for; the second is a backup option in case of bad weather or scheduling conflicts; and the third is a final deadline we do not want to miss. That being said, my opinions are always meant to be suggestions. At the end of the day, it is completely up to the couple to decide what they like best.<\/p>\n

Working with your photographer during an engagement session can help you discover what you naturally like in photos\u2014your preferred poses, facial expressions, angles, and even little details you may not have realized would matter to you. It becomes a chance to learn what feels comfortable and what reflects you best as a couple.<\/p>\n

This gives you more confidence and control over your wedding images.
